Dosha Yoga
THE 5 ELEMENTS AND THE 3 DOSHAS.
The 5 Elements come together as Doshas - "that which tends to go out of balance."
The 5 elements (air, space, fire, water, earth) are components of every aspect of our world. They make up our external environments as well as our internal bodies and minds. Like increases like. So in order to balance ourselves, we must bring in qualities to neutralize, not increase our tendencies. It is also of note that the time of day, time of year and time of our life affect our dosha imbalance. 2 -6 am/pm is governed by Vata, 6-10am/pm by Kapha and 10-2 by Pitta. The Autumn with its windy and changeable season is Vata time, the hot summer by Pitta and the Cold, moist winter and spring thaw by Kapha. The first part of a person's life (childhood), is supported by sturdy Kapha, the middle go-getting ambitious time is Pitta-dominated and the latter more diffused part of one's life is Vata-led.
VATA-BALANCING PRACTICE:
Vata is made up of air and space. It is compared with the wind and thought to be light, cold, dry and on the move. People with a vata constitution are most supported by an asana practice which is calming, quieting and warming. One's breath and movement should be done with the intention to heat and ground. Forward bending poses held slowly and deeply with focus on long inhales are beneficial. Poses which help reduce air in the body will help balance vata. Click here for a sample video vata practice.
PITTA-BALANCING PRACTICE:
Pitta is made up of liquid fire. Pitta is hot, sharp, intense and light.People with a pitta constitution are most supported by an asana practice which is cooling, quieting and surrendering. One's breath and movement should be done with the intention to calm and cool. Twisting poses done gently with focus on long exhales are beneficial. Poses which cool the body and diffuse the mind will help balance pitta. Click here for a sample video pitta practice.
KAPHA-BALANCING PRACTICE:
Kapha is made up of earth and water, mud-like quality. Kapha is cold, heavy, oily, slow to change. People with a kapha constitution are most supported by an asana practice which is stimulating and warming. Invigorating standing poses done with the intent to move more quickly will help balance kapha. Click here for a sample video kapha practice.
